Kine Per week told you “The fresh strong ‘crooks fall out’ try peopled which have a colourful assortment of vital and you can arresting letters, and these, skilfully controlled because of the copywriter and movie director, let the film to help you tread water effortlessly. It is only with the end which begins to falter, but the smack-up finale rescues they on the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and smartly dialogued, it will have zero high challenge in living off its extremely unsightly name.” [ 8 ]

Dick Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes lead the brand new cast professionally, since detective was enjoyed big aplomb by see your face identification, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody about This new Yorker noted “So it terse and taut film noir is based on the latest close and you can elite issues of term character, the new unlawful mastermind (played because of the Manhood Powell) about a sophisticated unlawful local casino. New film’s publisher and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal bet, between Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) spent some time working from the gambling enterprise and you will dated an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic script, the fresh new cast’s suavely regulated body gestures regarding love and you may possibility, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably cocky photo (and their political conscience) make this pugnacious but really detailed spectacle an invisible vintage of style.” [ 10 ]

Photograph keeps activity and suspense, and you can particular brief satisfies out-of jokes to add preferences. Ace performances from the Knob Powell, because the a betting house overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, just like the a police inspector, including within the score . While the patch follows a common pattern, the fresh characterizations is actually fresh together with performances suitable to overbalance. Dialogue was terse and you can topical, preventing the emotional, phoney reach. Uncommon digital camera bases show up now and then in order to intensify attention and you may briefly arrest the eye. Strong teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling once the manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, completely new blogger and user music producer, also supports making this a softer production.” [ 11 ]

It is generally an issue of enjoying Mr. Powell proceed through his paces stylishly if you are a massive shed of actors and you will performers give him typical service. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good nothing lady who brings forth brand new finest in your and you can Ellen Received is the easy and you can slinky vixen just who gets him into jams. Thomas Gomez try greasy given that villain and you can Lee J. Cobb do a special able journey while the an exhausted cops inspector which finally shuts the scenario. A great deal of ingesting and smoking is done by all the alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
Philp French, composing on the Observer said: “That it rarely revealed flick noir ‘s the chill, regulated directorial first of your own left-side author just who continued and then make particularly classics since the The the new King’s Dudes and the Hustler .” [ thirteen ]
